The Big Conversation 2007 is a national competition and debate organised by DCSF and Understanding Slavery. The initiative encourages students aged 11-14 to research and discuss the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade.

The competition supports the KS3 Citizenship and history curriculum, including new content announced in July 2007. The Citizen Resource - a free teaching pack available to all schools in England - and an interactive student website support the competition. Teachers can order a free resource by emailing: enquiries@thebigconversation2007.com

Students from the winning schools will discuss their work and ideas with representatives from education, culture and the media in December. The closing date for entries is 19 October. For more details visit: www.understandingslavery.com/citizen
