CONTEXT:
Head Teacher Alison Brant is keen to promote awareness of  International and multi cultural issues and the curriculum at Deerhurst and Apperley reflects this.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:
To facilitate the successful integration of a newly arrived Japanese speaking pupil at Deerhurst and Apperley Cof E Primary School.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:

The school prepared for Loshin’s arrival by contacting the Japanese Embassy for an informative artefacts box to share with the pupils and a welcome display was created.

Loshin has made exceptionally good progress and the encouragement of the staff to involve his parents in school life has benefited all and promoted a real sense of understanding about a different culture. Indeed, as a resident artist with the National Trust, Loshin’s father led school workshops and taught the skill of Sumi e painting. As the photographs show this was an exciting opportunity to learn from a professional artist. Meanwhile Loshin’s mother has regularly visited school teaching about Japanese culture and music.

COMMENTARY / OUTCOMES:
Deerhust and Apperley are delighted to have had their application to host a visiting Japanese teacher to the LEA accepted by the International Education Office. The prestigious Japanese Teachers’ Study Visit programme has enabled Ms Muroi to both take classes including teaching origami, the geography of Japan, arts and calligraphy whilst observing and reflecting upon teaching styles in this small village school with a vibrant inclusive curriculum.
