The History of Stow Fair

by Ruth and Liam

Stow Fair started in 1107 as a weekly market. Even

before that, Stow was a meeting place because it was

where eight main track ways met. The Fair itself started

in 1330 as a seven day fair every August. In 1476 this

was changed to two fairs in May and October. They are

still held today at the same times. The fair also carried

on as a very important market. People even came from

abroad. At today’s fairs things are different but you can

still buy many things.

The gypsies came in large numbers because they felt safe

around lots of other people. Today many Gypsy Travellers

come to the fair. It is a very important place for them

to come because then they can meet their friends and

family. It is also a very important horse fair. Stow Fair

attracts hundreds of people nowadays.

Stow Fair is interesting because you get to see how

others live and their different backgrounds. You also get

to see lots of different animals being sold, such as

puppies, chickens, geese and birds.
