An Apple Tree

We planted an apple tree today,
And in the breeze I watch it sway.
No leaves to clothe its deep brown bark.
Its branches bare, empty like a deserted park.

As the tree imbedding took place.
Not smile was disposed from anyone’s face.
We stood, remembering and reflecting
The pain suffered in the holocaust.
Innocent Jews were viciously slaughtered.
Families torn, demoralised then lost.

Our apple tree will live and grow,
Learning little as it goes,
Sweat in summer, shiver through the snow.
How our tree feels, knowone can know.

The Jews were cruelly striped of everything they owned.
Not a leaf was left to keep their pride and dignity contained.
They froze in the frosty hours, burned with flames,
Only extinguished by the pouring rain.

We hope just by planting a tree here,
People casually strolling to their cars,
Will stop; maybe even shed a reflective tear
For those brave Jews who wore a yellow star.
