Recently Haltia Watkins and Dee Russell-Thomas were invited to visit one of the Aiming High piloted schools in Bristol. It was a useful opportunity to engage with one of the Government initiative schools and share experiences, methodology and outcomes. The school has been supported financially along with other selected schools across the country.
Whilst Gloucestershire schools have not been a part of the Aiming High pilot we have worked very closely with one of the consultants, Rosemary Campbell and they have been very interested in seeing how we have developed our own approach to raising awareness and improving performance, not just in one selected school but across the range of schools in our county. Because of the comparatively small cohort of black students in each school, it is always difficult to collect meaningful data. However, by clustering a number of schools together and establishing a higher cohort, we can record and examine in a significant manner. Other counties with similar situations are now considering this approach.
