BEAT IT! African Drumming Workshop at St. David's Primary School

Stereotypes need to be challenged. To many children, Africans are poor, sad and needy but a dose of African drumming and dancing at St. David's School soon dispelled that stereotype.

Three Senegalese drummers and dancers spent the day at the school leading noisy and heart-warming workshops in the two arts. Every child played the deep and throaty African drums, and they all took part in what can only be described as African line dancing. Faces glowed and engagement was complete.

At the end of a beautiful spring afternoon, the three performers gave an exuberant demonstration of their skills, including spectacular acrobatics. Parents waiting to collect their children strained into every available space in doorways, captivated by the sight. Everyone agreed that it had been the best group of visitors we had ever enjoyed; and those stereotypes had been well and truly banished.
