Ethnicity and Education: The Evidence on Minority Ethnic Pupils Aged 5-16

DfES Research Topic Paper

Did you know that in 2006, 21% of the maintained primary school population and 17% of the maintained secondary school population in England were classified as belonging to a minority ethnic group?

Did you know that whilst 42% of White British and 37% of Mixed Heritage pupils report having no religion, the majority of Black Caribbean and Black African pupils say that they are Christian; the majority of Pakistani and Bangladeshi pupils say they are Muslim and roughly equal proportions of Indian pupils say they are Hindu, Sikh or Muslim? Religion is more important for young people in these minority ethnic groups than it is for White British or Mixed pupils.

Did you know that Indian, Chinese, & Irish pupils consistently have higher levels of attainment than other ethnic groups, including White English, across all the Key Stages?
