The Black Forum
The Black Forum continues to meet every month. Our priority is always the children and the focus is on action! Facilitators continue to give of their time and visit schools, helping individual pupils and talking about their own experiences. Some schools have followed Brockworth's example, and invited members to come and talk to groups within the school. We are still keen to run more workshops and look forward to schools contacting us.
One of this year's big events was the "Youth Voice" This was kindly hosted by The University of Gloucestershire and representatives from the Fishpool schools spent an afternoon at the Oxstalls campus talking about their hopes and fears, their strengths and weakness and their aspirations. This was quite a controversial event but an important one. It was also a wonderful opportunity for our young people to see the University in their own town and to get just a flavour of the possibilities.
We also held a smaller Youth Voice at Widden School. This too was a useful insight into the needs and feelings of our young people. As a result of this, Mary Sergeant has established a Black Youth Forum. This group also took part in an interesting African event entitled "ACCESS to influencing change through Youth Leadership" held at The University in conjunction with The British Council and led by Churchill Audi. The speakers from a range of African countries were an inspiration to us all and it was good to see the Black Youth Forum engaging in the discussions.
We also welcomed guest speaker Danny Williams to tell us about projects he runs for mixed heritage young people. He presented us with some interesting information and we are now discussing how this can be best used.
