Ethnic Minority AchievementThe Dancing Bears Reading Intervention Programme
St John's Primary School, Cheltenham, has trialed the Dancing Bear Reading Intervention Programme with early years EAL children, particularly those who arrive late in the Reception Year or Year 1. The intervention is a complete decoding programme that does not require any lesson planning. It is delivered every day for 10 minutes for a 16 week period. The programme is delivered by a number of volunteers who have been trained by the EAL teacher. Evaluation of the intervention has shown that EAL pupils who participate in the programme rapidly acquire good reading skills and are thus able to access the curriculum more readily.
