E-LAMP success for Traveller pupils

The 2 DCSF funded E-Learning And Mobility projects run by the Traveller Education Team have been highly successful. All the young people who participated were loaned a laptop, printer, mobile internet access and some also used digital cameras.

Strand A involved 10 pupils who spend a significant proportion of the school year travelling with fairs or for other occupational reasons. Although there were occasional technical problems, not always easy to remedy at a distance, all except one of the pupils received and returned work from their teachers while they were away.

They were also able to keep in touch with their school and their friends by email. Not only did these young people keep up with their education when they were travelling, but they also settled back into school more easily after the travelling season was over.

Strand B was with seven Y11 learners who are disengaged from school. All worked extremely hard on ASDAN level 1 or Level 2 Wider Key Skills qualifications.

DCSF funding has been assured for one more year. Strand A will expand to 20 pupils this year and Strand B will continue at the same level.

E-LAMP 4 ME competition

To celebrate the success of the E-Lamp projects, the NATT (National Association of Traveller Teachers) held a competition for the pupils from the 35 LAs who participated. The young people were asked to produce a piece of text or art work depicting what they had enjoyed about the project and 1st and 2nd prizes were awarded in each age group.

Gloucestershire swept the board with 4 winners!

Grace Stevens (Kingsholm), Christopher Danter (Maidenhill) and Lisa Royles (Elective Home Education) all scooped 1st prizes of £100 of High Street vouchers, while Chantelle Royles (Elective Home Education) took 2nd prize of £50 of vouchers. The prizes were presented at the House of Lords by Lord Avebury in March.
