Churchdown Parton Manor Junior School Celebrate GRT History Month
The children of Churchdown Parton Manor Junior School celebrated GRT History Month by entering the Poster competition run by the Gypsy Roma Traveller Achievement Service, Leeds.
Earlier in the year, the school had been selected by the National Association for Traveller Teachers to receive resources that reflect Traveller Culture. The children from Y4 set about exploring art from the Traveller way of life, particularly Gypsy Wagons. They looked very closely at the designs: fruits, flowers, birds, horseshoes and scrolls. They looked at the rich colours and very much liked the gold detail.
The children watched DVDs of Travelling stories and the Traveller children in the group could tell their own stories about their own experiences. Art co-ordinator Susie Phillips, along with fellow teacher Mark Page, discussed with the children the sample posters sent.
The children produced wonderful pictures depicting wagon art and journeys. They printed with acrylic paint and then used batik inks to produce paper to use for collage to represent the vivid colours and patterns used in Traveller art. This was then used together with watercolours and fine lines to complete their works of art. Finally, they highlighted their work with gold.
The finished articles were sent off just in time to meet the deadline. The school took colour photocopies of a selection, which were displayed in class and in the library for all to share.
