He says that he came here to earn money by working in different restaurants. He initially worked in Brighton and came to Gloucester in 1982 working in a restaurant called "Gandhi". His brother and he lived with a friend Hafiz Ali. In 1983, in Barton Street they opened their own restaurant called the "Maharaja". Waris was the chef in that restaurant and worked very hard. He married in 1970 having four sons and three daughters. All of them have been educated in this country. My son Chand Ali is in the restaurant business. Three of the children have now married in Bangladesh. After working for so long and so hard, Waris became very ill and had
to give up working. He used to be the chairman of the Bangladeshi Association
in Gloucester but is now just a member because of his ill health. |
