6. Look at the life of Avatar Nath Duggal (p134-145). You will construct an empathy graph about Mr. Duggal's life. [If you cannot remember how to do this, then check back to the Chinese exercise we did and use that as a model - link to explanation]. 7) a. Amrit Kaur Gill b. Shimla c. Gurkama Singh Gill d. Parmjit Dhanda

8. Study page 153 about Parmjit Dhanda.

  • Firstly, find statements that hold back the development of a multicultural society.
  • Then find statements that help the development of a multicultural society.
  • Then find statements from page 151 and page 145 to show the dynamic development of a multicultural England.

Now look at pages 154155 and write a script for Manny Masih for a radio programme for the Asian Christian community; then write a radio script for a piece about Gymnation and its place in the wider scheme of things.

9. EXTRA WORK FOR FAST FINISHERS

a) Study this statement from Umara Hussein on page 166 – “A half of me is Pakistani and a half of me is English.”

It is this dynamic of change for individuals that brings about wider social change - and the creation of a new multicultural, diverse England/Britain/Gloucester. Mainstream culture changes with the impact of minority cultures and the minority cultures alter too. This obviously creates tensions and problems for some people and for some generations – but we all need to solve problems together peacefully. Then we can create a vibrant harmonious Britain.

  • List 10 problems that this dynamic of change creates. Then list 10 solutions. Then list 10 examples of how mainstream and minority cultures impact and change each other – for example, music?
  • Then list 10 bullet points to show how Umara Hussein’s life (p165–166) shows that multicultural dynamic of change. Hand in your work for display.

b) Construct a time graph of Lalit Chandra Dandiker’s life (p167–168), labelling his achievements, or using a key.

c) List 10 bullet points to show why Mohammed Hansdat (p169) would be so suitable for this oral history project. What was one of the most important questions involved in this project?

d) List 10 bullet points to show why Sakina Sarwar Chondley (p170-172) would be so suitable for the project. What hopes and beliefs does she have for this project?

e) Now look back at all four authors (a-d above). List as many points as you can to show why they would be such a good team.

f) Now construct a spider diagram about Harry Worrall (p174-179). Show all the ways in which he helped create a multicultural Gloucester.

Optional Story telling exercise for the whole class

Study pages 130-135 about the Sikh Panjabi community. Look at the story telling exercise used in the Chinese work and use that model for this activity.
