GROUP B - Studies Ebrahim Mohammed Surty's story.

Read Ebrahim Mohammed Surty's story (p33-38).

(a.) Place a world map on sugar paper and show the migration routes of Ebrahim's Muslim ancestors.

(b.) Most people imagine that independence from the British Empire would mean freedom – was this true for Ebrahim's community?

(c.) Give 3 reasons why he came to Britain (p34). If this was the case, why was it a sad day when he left?

(d.) Using page 34, write an imaginary diary entry for Ebrahim.

(e.) Design a spider diagram to show how Gloucester's Muslim community solved the problem of having no mosque in Gloucester in the 1960's. (p35)

(f.) Describe the events surrounding the opening of the mosque in 1983 and indicate the mosque's significance (p36).

(g.) What generational differences are shown by Ebrahim's comments running from the bottom of page 36 to 38? Are these differences similar to those we might find in mainstream British culture?

Now hand in your work for display and mounting.
